[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/mandlsuperstarsaga/cover.jpg[/floatleft]Mario & Luigi: Super Star Saga is the first RPG I have played in over a year, and it does not disappoint. The whole game is endowed with enormous amounts of personality and humor that draw you into the story, and the battle system is much more interactive than the traditional “pick things out of a menu” style of play used in so many RPGs. Despite a few minor complaints, I would say this game is the most fun I have had with the Gameboy Advance yet.

Anyone who has played the original Super Mario RPG will instantly see what the writers behind Mario & Luigi were aiming for. The game acts as a tribute to past Mario games, filled with cameos by major players, and appearances by most traditional Mario enemies. The Beanbean kingdom, where the game takes place, has it’s own wonderful look and feel, but the high points for me were the appearance of major and minor players from past Mario Games.

The environments are typical of RPGs, but with some emphasis on jumping puzzles. You are limited in where you can go by the power ups and “Bros. Powers” you have learned. These Bros. Powers range from Mario jumping on Luigi’s shoulders to make a long distance spinning jump to the brothers hitting each other with hammers and lighting each other on fire to produce various effects. I’m glad to know that so many of life’s problems can be solved by hitting one’s siblings over the head with a hammer.

[floatright]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/mandlsuperstarsaga/ss02_thumb.jpg[/floatright]The combat system will also be familiar to those who played Super Mario RPG. Instead of simply choosing a command for your character to perform and sitting back to enjoy the show, you must tap or hold buttons at the right times to make a perfect attack or to defend yourself. Properly timed and executed defense can make a big difference in a fight. You can even affect the opening of a battle based on how you interact with enemies in the overworld screens. For example, jumping onto an overworld enemy causes all of the enemies to take damage as you enter the battle screen, and hitting one with a hammer stuns them for a round. These elements add a level of interactivity that is often lacking in turn-based RPGs.

The “Bros. Attacks” are the game’s equivalent of magic. They involve both characters using a series of skills together to cause lots of damage and other effects to an enemy. They involve a sequence of properly timed button presses. These can either be displayed for you, or you can run the technique in slow-motion, or you can try to do it all from memory without the aid of slow-mo or on-screen hints. The less hints you use, the more powerful these are. The moves are hilarious looking, but too difficult to learn in contrast with the rest of the game, so I didn’t use them very often.

The graphics and design for this game were incredible. Everything was very colorful and filled with personality. Mixed with the writing, it really brought the whole idea of the Mario world to life. Every character had a few excellent yet fairly simple animations to help you feel their misery and elation as the game progressed. The sounds that matched every animation were also simple yet amazingly appropriate. Overall I felt that this game did an even better job of portraying the characters and world than Super Mario RPG did.

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/mandlsuperstarsaga/ss03_thumb.jpg[/floatleft]I did have one minor complaint about the game. Like many modern games, Mario & Luigi only allows you to save at specific save spots. This worked fine in Super Mario RPG, but Mario & Luigi is a portable game. This means you might be playing it in a situation where the game must be turned off at any time, losing all data since the last save. While save points were usually fairly common, the game would have benefited from an extra temporary save that is deleted when it is used, but is always available. Super Mario Advance 4 has this feature, and more games should start using this method.

The effective use of Mario nostalgia, more interactive battle techniques, and excellent graphics and sound design helped give this game a level of personality and fun that is lacking in many games out today. Anyone who is a fan of Mario or RPGs owes it to themselves to give this game a try. Mario & Luigi: Super Star Saga is definitely a worthy successor to Super Mario RPG, and we can only hope that more games like this will appear in the future.

Counter-Strike

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/counterstrike/cover.jpg[/floatleft]It’s always interesting to see how a game does when it is ported from PC to console. Sometimes it fails and sometimes it does really well, it just depends how well the game stands up to its flaws. In the case of Counter-Strike (CS) for the Xbox, it had both positive and negative aspects to balance it out. Most gamers will frown upon the idea of making a popular FPS PC game into a console game. Why you ask? Everyone knows that FPS games are historically much better on PC than on a console. The use of a keyboard and mouse lends itself to better controls, graphics, online multiplayer, and sound are all aspects that seem to be superior in most cases on a PC than a console. CS had these aspects going for it until “PC GAMER” came along and ruined it for everyone. This and some other reasons are why CS for Xbox is a much better played on console than PC.

Dissecting CS is not all that hard if you think about it. The PC version, which is about four years old, was a mod for Half-Life’s online multiplayer. The mod brought new weapons, gameplay, and maps to the Sci-Fi dominated FPS world at the time. CS is a game that is played with two opposing teams, The Terrorist and The Counter Terrorist (CT’s). The game has two multiplayer modes, demolition and hostage rescue. The terrorists prevent the CT’s from breaching their compound and rescuing the hostages by taking them to an extraction point in hostage rescue. Demolition splits the CT’s to defend two sites from being bombed by the terrorists. The terrorists have a designated bomb holder that must plant the bomb at a certain location. Once it’s in place, you must prevent the CT’s from breaching the area to diffuse the bomb. Counter Strike has long been a favorite game of everyone’s favorite, PC GAMER. The Xbox version of Counter-Strike has had a face lift in graphics, new maps, and an effective ANTI-PC GAMER LOCK. You are probably asking yourself “What is he talking about PC GAMER? What does that mean?” I will to get that shortly folks, I need to get some of the other things out of the way first.

[floatright]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/counterstrike/ss03_thumb.jpg[/floatright]Being an original CS PC gamer, I was eager to get my hands on the Xbox version of this game. Hearing that new maps and a new single player mode would be added, I was anticipating its release. There are seven new maps that are included with the original seven that were ported from the PC version. The weapons and the method of purchasing the weapons has not changed a bit from its PC counterpart. The more people you kill, if you diffuse a bomb, if you detonate a bomb, if you rescue a hostage all result in gaining additional cash for better weapons.

A feature that they decided to add to the Xbox version of CS, was the online multiplayer mode through Xbox Live. This game is all about the online multiplayer by a large margin. Through Xbox Live, this makes CS un-hackable when playing with others online. Unlike its predecessor, there are no cheat codes or mods that you can input to get one headshot kills, walking through walls, god mode or any of the other numerous hacks available for the original game. Playing the PC version was one of the most frustrating experiences on earth. Many PC GAMERS would hack CS and make others playing experiences miserable. PC GAMER is the person who sits at home and plays countless hours of CS or any other game under the sun, using cheat codes, and ruining other gamers experiences. The Xbox version prevents people from having a miserable time playing CS.

If you are new to the CS world, don’t fret. The single player mode will allow you to get adapted to the world of CS. You can customize the difficulty and the number of bots you want to play against. Playing CS is quite fun and the controls are very easy to learn. Try not to compare CS to that of Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell, or even Ghost Recon. CS is a shoot em up game that is fast paced and fun. Stealth is not a factor in this game, but execution and team work are big factors in this game. The more teamwork, the more exciting and enjoyable the game gets.

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/counterstrike/ss05_thumb.jpg[/floatleft]For you FPS shoot’em up fans, this game would most definitely suit your needs. CS provides a fast paced game with an enjoyable online multiplayer. CS still stays true to its roots and succeeds to bring great FPS action to the Xbox. With Xbox Live, CS has made it expandable for downloading new maps and additional content. Overall, Counter-Strike delivers great multiplayer gaming with exciting fast paced run and gun. This is a title that must be in your FPS library for you run and gun fans, my suggestion is to “GO, GO, GO!!” To your nearest EB Games and get your copy. “ROGER THAT!!”

Hi again

April 27, 2004

I spent a lot of time working on updating information in the Gamertag Directory yesterday. For starters, I added all the missing PS2 games that I could find that were online enabled. I know that the PC list is probably lagging behind so if someone wants to take a look at it and let me know of any big games I am missing I would be grateful. I also finished updating all of the Xbox Live feature information, and a big thanks to anyone who submitted information for that as it was a big help. Next up is, collecting boxshots for all the new games I added and getting their developers and publishers entered correctly.

I have quite a few backend related things I will be working on over the next few weeks to try and get this site to a point where I am happy with it. I am also going to try and get some writing done so the website is actually worth visiting.

Whooooooooo!

April 26, 2004

Ill see you suckers on Xbox Live when I am Maddening your ASS!

Dammit!

April 23, 2004

I have to go out and get another PS2. For those that dont know I got rid of my PS2 a while back because it would not play any games. Typical. However now La Pucelle Tactics is coming out from the makers of Disgaea and of course I have to get it before you cant find it! This genre is growing real fast, and personally I have loved the Tactics games for a while now. Only thing is that releases do not number many so after a month or so the fan boys pretty much own all of them. Make sure you pick one up at EB Games (Huebner that is)or preorder it like RIGHT NOW. May 11 is the release date.
