[UPDATED] Guitar Hero 80s Set Lists Detailed, More Or Less

With Harmonix's encore performance with the popular Guitar Hero franchise nearly upon us, Activision has been slowly leaking out a few songs each day or so that will make an appearance on the upcoming rhythm action game.

While it's probably hard to appreciate on your end, it's been painful not to just tell you all what songs will be on the game, as we've been playing the title for a few weeks now. However, given that the lions' share of the songs have been released, we figured we'd break down the game's set lists based on what has been officially announced so far.

We've also linked to a few videos of us playing a few of these songs as well, so be nice.

Wraithchild is Iron Maiden, so that's good. Holy Diver is Dio. Other than these two, the list does not look impressive.

It can't all be the same sort of music, my friend.
Jun 13, 2007 4:01 am

Turning Japanese is by The Vapors, and that's good. I don't recognise much there though, if I saw band names, I could do some research. :)
Jun 13, 2007 4:03 am

I Ran and Turning Japanese are classic 80s. Actually, also Hold on Loosely and What I Like About You.

And Ballroom Blitz is just awesome. But I'm not a big Guitar Hero...erm...Hero.
Jun 13, 2007 5:25 am

They could've put some Billy Idol or Guns N' Roses...
Jun 13, 2007 7:13 am

I dunno, it's a decent list, but I just think there should be more songs. There are too many to list that I would want, but oh well... guess we'll see what else is on the disc (which should NOT be $50 when it comes out!!!).
Jun 13, 2007 12:57 pm

I know none of the songs on that list. Well, I think I heard I Ran on one of those 80s compilation commercials.

I think it's because I'm a young 20 year-old whippersnapper.
Jun 13, 2007 2:26 pm

What little I know is a result of the Vice City and Vice City Stories soundtracks.
Jun 13, 2007 2:29 pm

Man, how old do I feel? Not only do I know of almost every one of those songs, but I know the words, and own or have owned most the albums.

*sigh*

We can't help it most of you guys are fossils.

lol I'm not quite THAT old. Most of them are cassette.
Jun 15, 2007 7:15 pm

So where does We Got the Beat go? First tier, I'm assuming? Also, would it be possible to post videos for Balls to the Wall, 18 & Life, Shakin', Ballroom Blitz and Hold on Loosely? There are no videos for those songs anywhere yet, and you'd probably be able to get lots of hits from the official GH forms (I'll link them to the big threads over there for you).
Jun 18, 2007 8:54 pm

I'll boot it up and record some videos this evening. I cannot guarantee Expert on those, but Hard should not be a problem.
Jun 19, 2007 6:13 am

Thanks! Everyone over at the official forums would really appreciate the videos. Most people are pretty attached to expert videos, and I imagine your videos would continue generating hits for much longer if they were on expert. You can always do them on pro faceoff or practice mode if you can't pass them on expert. That way, you won't fail and everyone can see what the full note chart looks like. If not, it will still be awesome to see the new songs on hard.
Thanks!
Jun 19, 2007 9:17 am

Yes, 'We Got The Beat' is the 3rd track in the 1st set. I'll get that added (was not aware that it was announced).

I'll get some tracks recorded tonight (my wife is actually who plays most of them so I'll enlist her help when she gets home).
Jun 19, 2007 12:57 pm

Yeah, We Got the Beat kind of snuck by. In was in the official trailer for the game; some on-screen text said "Featuring the Hit Songs I Wanna Rock and We Got the Beat." There are already videos for it on youtube. It pretty much looks like the easiest GH song since I Love Rock & Roll.
Jun 19, 2007 8:14 pm

By far the most fun song (I think) is Turning Japanese. It's a ways down the set list, but I think 18 and Life is also one of the easieist as well.
Jun 19, 2007 8:51 pm

I thought 18 & Life sounded way too easy to be a final tier song, especially considering Play with Me and Caught in a Mosh look so tough. Are those the toughest two songs, or are there any harder ones (either unannounced or already announced)? Then again, there aren't any videos out there for 18 & Life, so I thought they might have spiced it up a bit by extending the guitar solo or something. Did you ever come up with your list of bands that aren't in the game and/or the new gameplay vids? Can you tell I'm starving for any drop of new info?
Jun 19, 2007 9:03 pm

LOL...Im making a list of what Robyn and I think are the top 5 bands not in the game.

We're gonna record some vids yea. I'm trying to kick her off MySpace and get to rocking right now. :)
Jun 19, 2007 9:14 pm

So are we going to see any of those videos any time soon? <grin>

I've been waiting for a video of Hold on Loosely for some time now and Sluggo took a break from posting videos.
Jun 21, 2007 12:17 pm

yea yea. we were going to do them last night and a sort of child emergency with my son...today has been spent going to doctors and dentists. Yay.

What I am going to do is as requested, tape 2 or 3 of the requested songs on training on expert so I dont have to play them and you can see how the notes play out...and then a couple on hard actually being played so that we are not TOO embarassed. :P
Jun 21, 2007 1:12 pm

Also, out of curiousity, and since I'm used to being crufied in this industry, how has the GH forums been responding generally to our posts? If you don't mind me asking?
Jun 21, 2007 1:16 pm

Theres not a lot of discussion other than some people remarking that they are disappointed that some of the bands are not in the game. Most topics are being shadowed by people posting "OMG here are the remaining songs in the game" and then quoting Wikipedia. Personally I am just disappointed Here I Go Again won't be in the game as the song had been licensed earlier for Karaoke Party Revolution.

When you get around to doing the videos, just make sure you're not doing songs that already have videos. Sluggo posted videos for just about all of the songs and coupled with the Gameinformer videos, there aren't many known songs left that dont have videos. In fact, the only revealed songs without videos are Hold on Loosely, Balls to the Wall, Ballroom Blitz, 18 and Life and Shakin'.
Jun 21, 2007 1:53 pm

thanks for the heads up...ill handle those 4 then.
Jun 21, 2007 2:14 pm

I can't speak for everyone on the forums, but you have been very helpful for all of us who are eagerly awaiting new info. As mentioned by Riff, the big problem there is getting people to understand the difference between a reliable source and some random vandalizing of wikipedia. The list of bands not in the game certainly makes a lot of us sad, but it also helps us keep our expectations in check. The last two songs announced for GHII were Carry Me Home and Institutionalized, which was a major letdown, so at least we're braced for it this time. I'm sure everyone will go crazy for the videos. Thanks again!
Jun 21, 2007 3:49 pm

You cannot imagine (or maybe you call) my sadness getting ot the final track in 80s, waiting for the encore to begin, and finding out its Ballroom Blitz. Not exactly an iconic 80s tune, and certainly not what i wanted to go out on.
Jun 21, 2007 3:57 pm

Have you played the unlockable track that you get after you beat all 30, and if you have, is it any good or will we be dissapointed?
Jun 21, 2007 4:18 pm

yes, and I predict some dissappointment. It's just a wierd choice. It's also very difficult (lots of orange/yellow/green 3-note cords).
Jun 21, 2007 4:21 pm

Is there any confirmed Metallica in the game?
Jun 21, 2007 6:13 pm

So, when are you going to post those videos (ones that aren't already on YouTube)?
Jun 21, 2007 6:41 pm

Is anyone else just absolutely certain that this tracklist will change substantially before the final release? I just can't see Play With Me and Caught in a Mosh coming before 18 & Life and Ballroom Blitz. From what I've seen so far, Play With Me should definitely be the final song.
Jun 21, 2007 8:45 pm

Uploading 18 and Life and Shakin' now...will do the other 3 tomorrow.
Jun 21, 2007 9:22 pm

Links added to the OP.
Jun 21, 2007 9:46 pm

Thanks! I actually think 18 & Life seems awesome for GH, even if it does look a tad easy.
Jun 21, 2007 10:22 pm

I noticed some confusion on the GH forums...I should have started taping when we selected the difficulty..both of those were on Expert.

edit...I wanna thank whoever it was over there that put them up on YouTube. I tried last night but it kept crapping out.
Jun 22, 2007 8:52 am

It's kind of the working assumption that they took out I Want Candy to make room for some other, hopefully better song. Given that you were able to play all 30 tracks in the game, which one would you have taken out (not counting the bonus song)? If it is one of the unannounced tracks, just say so. I'm just curious if it seems like they took it out because it wasn't fun to play, or if they were truly able to find something better at the last minute.
Jun 22, 2007 4:52 pm

When you do the next videos, could you please turn down the crowd noise to a minimum? The sound quality on the videos isn't all that great due to the audio not being recorded directly from the source and the crowd noise is a large part of the problem.
Jun 22, 2007 4:52 pm

sure...im actually trying to hook it up to an internal capture device. My wife fell asleep already so we wont be recording tonight as planned...so im fiddling with this card now.

I would have taken out all 3 of the tracks you don't yet know, as I think they are all pretty meh.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Anyway, how long is Balls to the Wall. If its a master track then it could be one of several versions. One version is quite long and has a monologue and some extended fills. The arrangement in the music video even leaves out parts that are in the shorter version of the song.

Also re "meh" songs. Personally, I think The Warrior is extremely "meh" but they announced that as one of the first tracks, so the remaining tracks might not be entirely "meh" to others. I also think the cover of Radar Love is absolutely horrible. The White Lion cover was pretty bad with Mike Tramp's subpar vocals but the cover of the cover is just awful with the overblown guitar feedback and the lousy guitar fills. Yet they announced that one too, so unless the remaining song covers sound like a bunch of cats getting run over by a steamroller, I'll reserve judgement until I hear them.

But not all ppl would think they're meh yet til they know if they like it or not

It's only one person's opinion
Jun 23, 2007 5:20 am

That's all any of this is. Some people may love the 80s game's selections. Some won't. Ta da!
Jun 23, 2007 6:37 am

Wow, so if I understand correctly, the three unannounced songs are your least favorite songs in the game? Just as a point of reference, if you had to pick your three least favorite songs out of the group we already know, what would they be?
Jun 23, 2007 10:51 am

Probably Bathroom Wall, Wraithchild, and maybe Balls to the Wall. Not my kind of music though, so take one opinion for what it's worth.
Jun 23, 2007 12:23 pm

Has there ever been AC/DC in a GH game?
Jun 23, 2007 1:25 pm

Can you tell the "Genre" of music? Or it's a too big hint ? ( Like Hair Metal,New wave, Punk etc )
Jun 23, 2007 3:30 pm

No, they haven't been in any GH games yet. The big three bands that a large majority of people seem to be clamoring for, but haven't been in any games yet are AC/DC, Metallica and Led Zeppelin. I imagine the problem just has to do with very high licensing costs.
Jun 23, 2007 3:30 pm

Freequebec86 wrote:Can you tell the "Genre" of music? Or it's a too big hint ? ( Like Hair Metal,New wave, Punk etc )

I really probably should not. I don't want to damage our relationship with those involved with the game. Plus, it will allo be yesterday's news in a matter of weeks. :)

Lol ook ok.... i will try to be patient.

But i reeeeeeallllly hope that they hide some song to "media" lol. 31songs is less then Gh1 :(.
Jun 23, 2007 9:26 pm

So, how about those last three videos???
Jun 23, 2007 9:33 pm

So do you know for sure if I Want Candy will be replaced? There has been a bit of confusion as to whether it was simply dropped for legal reasons or if they decided to replace it with something else.
Jun 24, 2007 12:07 pm

They have not said either way. Things have been very busy here...more than expected...with our upcoming website relaunch and other things, so the videos have taken a back burner. I'll do my best to get them up soon once things get less crazy.
Jun 24, 2007 2:11 pm

Take your time. Thanks for all of the info and help!
Jun 24, 2007 2:21 pm

Added a Expert training vid to Ballroom Blitz to the OP. As mentioned, it's not of us playing (the some bests us on Hard, let along Expert), but this will let you see how the notes play out on Expert for the song.
Jun 26, 2007 8:02 pm

Wow, you're deliberately spiting me by holding off on Hold on Loosely arent you? Anyway, on the official forums someone quoted an article with Bret Michaels of Poison. Apparently Bret said GH80s will also have Talk Dirty to Me. Can you confirm or deny this? I find it difficult to believe they would put two songs by the same artist in the game and I'll be rather disappointed if its true.
Jun 26, 2007 8:41 pm

I registered just to say thanks for these vids.
Jun 26, 2007 8:52 pm

Thanks for the Ballroom Blitz vid! Looks to be more of a challenge than I thought just by listening to the song.

That's not on the build that was sent out, so maybe they are doing some rearranging. Or maybe he's misinformed. Who knows. :)
Jun 27, 2007 5:24 am

3 more songs confirmed?
X-Los Angeles
Dead Kennedys-Police Truck
Judas Priest-Electric Eye

http://www.play.com/Games/PlayStation2/ ... oduct.html

......and the link forgot to delete I Want Candy

So 1 more song to go and an unlockable
Jun 28, 2007 5:09 am

That's them..updating the OP
Jun 28, 2007 5:48 am

Added the songs in their place in the OP.
Jun 28, 2007 6:01 am

ALSO, I noticed SOME confusion on the official GH forums on some vids posted, some people saying they are custom (I would not know how to do that if I tried, but it sounds cool). The Preview build has a LOT of GH2 menus and stuff in it still (one of screens still sings out "It's a psychobilly freak out!"). I fully expect this to change with the official version. Just wanted to clear that up.
Jun 28, 2007 6:18 am

Cooooooooool
Jun 28, 2007 6:42 am

So now that we know X-Los Angeles and Dead Kennedys-Police Truck are confirmed I have a question about them I hope you can answer.

Are they heavily edited? I just find it interesting that they chose these two songs considering some of the lyrics in the originals would definitely not give this game a T rating.
Jun 28, 2007 7:02 am

You know, I have not really paid attention to the lyrics while playing, but now you totally have me interested. I'll listen tonight and report.
Jun 28, 2007 7:22 am

Ugh. Police Truck and Los Angeles are extremely meh. I really dislike violent anti-social lyrics too. Electric Eye sounds awesome though. I figured that they weren't going to have Judas Priest after I heard Balls to the Wall given that Accept sounds like a mix of Judas Priest and AC/DC. Now the only question is whether I Want Candy has been replaced by the old bonus song or by a completely new song.

Can you say whether the bonus song has vocals or not? There are two rumored nstrumentals both of which would make me a sad panda if they are included.
Jun 28, 2007 11:38 am

Horrays, now I know what order their in. Caught in a Mosh should be last set though...

Oh, I meant to ask - can you still play the Stonehenge venue in this one? Cause, since there's less songs, there should be less venues, right?
Jun 28, 2007 11:51 am

Activision went ahead and announced it...the last track (Unlocked when you complete the game) is Because, it's Midnite by Limozeen.
Jun 28, 2007 12:55 pm

It confuses me as they never announced the replacement for I Want Candy yet

And the Activision announcement says that Balls to the Wall is not a master track and it also says that Electric Eye is a master when you said that Balls to the Wall is a master and Electric Eye is a cover :/

Will it be announced when they release the final setlist
Jun 28, 2007 1:04 pm

Is "I Want Candy" in your preview build, or does your version contain the new song?
Jun 28, 2007 1:04 pm

I want Candy is on mine
Jun 28, 2007 1:07 pm

Why do they always save the worst songs for last? I'd rather have three Made in Mexico covers of Bathroom Wall than Police Truck, Los Angeles and Because, It's Midnight. I sure hope they didn't move Because, It's Midnight into I Want Candy's spot. At least the disappointment is greatly reduced by the inclusion of Electric Eye.
Jun 28, 2007 1:08 pm

Just took a video of the game's intro and scrolling through the set list...I have no idea why...and a training vid of Because, it's Midnite because it's insane.
Jun 28, 2007 1:08 pm

Here's a video of the game's intro.
Jun 28, 2007 1:17 pm

Added the Limozeen vid to the OP.
Jun 28, 2007 1:20 pm

Wow, they did a great job at making the intro look almost exactly like Guitar Hero II's.
Jun 28, 2007 1:23 pm

Can someone upload it on youtube because realplayer and quicktime is being dumb :(
Jun 28, 2007 1:29 pm

I turn to the GH forum gods for assistance :)
Jun 28, 2007 1:29 pm

If you do more videos could you please please do Hold on Loosely first? I'd like to see The Hellion/Electric Eye too. Even if you think you aren't that good it would be nice if you played them so that we get the guitar to go along with the background.
Jun 28, 2007 4:13 pm

Found this on Score Hero about the Limozeen Song

sluggo wrote:
2n2 wrote:Just saw the practice video for the Limozeen Song. OMG, the chords are ridiculous! How is that gonna be such a low tier?

I don't think that's the real note chart. If it's the same thing I saw in my preview build, it had no star power and cut off 3/4 of the way into the song. It looked like placeholder stuff.

I hope this is true because there's no solo when there should be one just 3 button chords :(

and this is the real setlist for the final version that sluggo released on Score Hero as the released setlist from RO

1) Opening Licks
(Bang Your Head) Metal Health - Quiet Riot
We Got The Beat - The Go Go's
I Ran (So Far Away) - Flock Of Seagulls (original artist)
Balls To The Wall - Accept
18 And Life - Skid Row

2) Amp Warmers
No One Like You - Scorpions
Shakin' - Eddie Money
Heat Of The Moment - Asia
Radar Love - White Lion
Because, It's Midnite - Limozeen (original artist)

3) String Snappers
Holy Diver - Dio
Turning Japanese - The Vapors
Hold On Loosely - .38 Special
The Warrior - Scandal (original artist)
I Wanna Rock - Twisted Sister (original artist)

4) Return Of The Shred
What I Like About You - The Romantics
Synchronicity II - The Police
Ballroom Blitz - Krokus
Only A Lad - Oingo Boingo
Round And Round - Ratt

5) Relentless Riffs
Ain't Nothin But A Good Time - Poison
Lonely Is The Night - Billy Squier
Bathroom Wall - Faster Pussycat
Los Angeles - X
Wrathchild - Iron Maiden

6) Furious Fretwork
Electric Eye - Judas Priest (original artist)
Police Truck - Dead Kennedys
Seventeen - Winger
Caught In A Mosh - Anthrax
Play With Me - Extreme
Jun 29, 2007 1:43 am

makes sense probably. I figured they would do some tweaking to the product before release.
Jun 29, 2007 5:32 am

What's up with Red Octane screwing up the names to songs? First they screw up "You've Got Another Thing Comin'" and now they've messed up "Nothin' But a Good Time." It's not "AIN'T Nothin' But a Good Time"!
Jun 29, 2007 8:26 am

Because, It's Midnite - Limozeen (original artist)

This is the greatest thing.

I don't think they actually misspelled it. On the GH80's site the audio preview shows "Nothing But a Good Time" which is still technically incorrect but barely. Sluggo's preview video showed "Nothin' But a Good Time". The first I ever heard of "Ain't Nothing But a Good Time" was when Kevin changed his list on the official forums without any evidence indicating that they added the word "Ain't." I'm more concerned with the Go-Go's being listed as the Gogo's.

You would think that given that they have to obtain licenses for the songs that they wouldn't make such simple mistakes as spelling band names or song titles incorrectly. Apparently they haven't heard of the intertubes where they can look up discographies for official spellings.
Jun 29, 2007 12:42 pm

As an aside...EA and Activision, Rock Band and GH3...these two houses and really gearing up to battle at E3 in a week or so. The mailers and phone calls and emails wont stop to arrange appointments. Both keep saying..."We're goona have celebs!" then the other will call "We will tooo!" It's funny. I promise pictures galore.
Jun 29, 2007 2:42 pm

Are they promising any sort of new specific info? I'm namely interested in promises of new modes and songs, but also DLC plans, etc.
Jun 29, 2007 9:00 pm

Well I'll be interviewing peeps and I'm sure they will announce stuff at their respectice press events.
Jun 29, 2007 9:11 pm

Nice. You should try to find out what the frontrunners are for the genre/decade for the next encore pack. I'm sure they won't directly answer the question, but vague generalities could give a hint. It would also be nice to get the full scoop on I Want Candy since its a bit of a question mark for everyone. Have you put together a question list yet?

I guess the Guitar Hero guys must have a thing for Homestar Runner/Strong Bad, seeing as "Trogdor" is in GHII and "Because, it's Midnite" is in GH: Rocks the 80s. I've heard some people complain that Limozeen isn't a real band, and so they shouldn't be included in the game; however, neither is Spinal Tap (GHII). Well, okay, I guess they did come out with a couple of albums...

Nope, no question list yet. I'm actually spending today on an E3 sabbatical before getting back into it on Sunday.

Hey eyetoy, have you received a review/final copy of GH 80's yet? Typically, how far ahead of the release does that happen, or do you pretty much get it when all of us do? I'm just curious if they managed to sneak in a few surprises between the preview version and the final one.

It varies by publisher, but I don't think he has gotten the final copy of the game yet.

Just out of curiosity, has your review copy arrived yet?

Sweet. There aren't any reviews up anywhere else yet, so you might be able to beat everyone to the punch if that one moves to the top of your list :-) I'm still betting that they sneaked in a new bonus song unlockable upon completion of the game and added another level of polish.

If you do check if Metal Health and Because It's Midnite has them ace solos I'll be disappointed if they dont do that

....and does Los Angeles have a crazy solo as it's in Tier 5

ok, final version in my hands...it's next on my list to play and review starting tonight.
Jul 19, 2007 8:18 am

Guitar Hero 3 better have Yngwie Malmsteen!
Jul 19, 2007 1:30 pm

Awesome. Have you noticed any major changes from the pre-release version yet (aside from the track order and I Want Candy's absence)? I'm dying for the scoop on whether they were able to sneak in a different bonus song or not.

The final build does not recognize saves from the preview build of course...playing through the game tonight in career so we can post up a final set list order.
