You’d think that, once I hit college, I would have replaced my insatiable lust for gaming with girls, booze, pizza, parties and the like. But my mom always said that balance in life was key, and I got fairly adept at balancing them. Sometimes, with a bit of practice, you could engage in all these activities at the same time. I even got some studying in sometimes! Now that’s balance.

My university comrades were just as much into Smash Bros. as my high school friends. The game doesn’t care where you live. It’s a universal language; a common denominator across all borders. The Final Fantasy XIII saga is the first true trilogy for the series, and Lightning Returns brings back the titular character for the finale of the story. It is also the first entry in the Final Fantasy franchise to feature a single character rather than a party during combat. Most of the games covered in this column require a great deal of involvement. Besides the necessary step of obtaining a copy of an old game and running it through the appropriate hardware, many of the titles I cover tend to indulge in extensive note-taking, high difficulty or, more importantly, a very specific frame of mind to make them shine. It’s perhaps for this reason that I decided to write about Motocross Maniacs, a quirky racing platformer that may be very accessible, but certainly isn’t uninteresting for it. At this point, the Magic: the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers franchise has become much like a sports one, annualized and focusing on the latest updates. This isn’t such a bad approach; bringing in the newest core set cards and mechanics is a nice enough way to freshen things up, and as a product designed to appeal to newcomers, it doesn’t have to bring wildly-different things to the table.
