The WWE feels as though it's designed for a game. Over-the-top action, crazy characters, flashy moves-it has everything a good title needs. So when THQ started designing the DS version of SmackDown vs. Raw 2008, they made sure to keep the fast-paced, chaotic nature of the sport.
Okay, so maybe not.
For some strange reason, the title is based on a turn-based rock-paper-scissors system. Players don't control the character's movement. Instead, the entire game is controlled by hitting one of three icons on the touch screen and moving the stylus in one of a few ways. Faster attacks are weaker, and the stronger attacks take longer to pull off, but everything just feels like a matter of luck.
The stylus movements are simple. Some actions require one swipe in one direction, while others respond to tapping and spinning. It all seems gimmicky, but it's the only real interactive element of the game, so I suppose one grateful.
The visuals are top-notch for a portable title, and the roster of fighters is a decent selection from SmackDown, Raw and even the ECW. The game's modes are varied and the presentation is smooth. Despite the small use of the second screen, the experience just feels polished, and is very reminiscent of the show itself. The base gameplay, though, just doesn't seem worth it.
WWE has a large, passionate following that loves watching famous wrestlers, and it feels like the game is just that. The game system just doesn't seem very interactive. Fans may have fun with the short stylus movements, but the core mechanic the game is based on just isn't compelling.
