Speculator: Tweeting teaser photos just ’cause

Will a mysterious tweeted photo mean a new Just Cause is near? Did that PS4 tease mean Final Fantasy XV is close too? And what will be the fate of Star Wars: 1313?

Just Cause 3 to be announced by E3 2013

Avalanche Studios has a number of games in development, but rumors are swirling that it plans to reveal a new Just Cause game at E3, thanks to a mysterious, Just Cause-looking photo tweeted without explanation by the head of Avalanche. It could very well be a screenshot from another game, or it could be a sneak peek at the next in the series.

Just Cause 3 seems like the perfect fit for the next generation, as the previous game (and, in some ways, the original) was for this current set of consoles. And with the success of the previous game (plus the picture in question looking very much like a Just Cause game), it seems like a safe bet that we’ll be seeing it very soon.

The screenshot in question looks almost like it could have been pulled out of Just Cause 2, so I’m certain it’s a new Just Cause game. I would bet it will be announced officially at E3 as an 8th-gen game, possibly even during Microsoft’s event. My only hesitation is on the timing. E3 seems the ideal time to show it off, but it’s always possible it isn’t show-ready by June.

Super-likely, given the post-photo chatter. I’d even bet we’ll see the game this holiday, but of course, I’m a bit less sure of that. Regardless: it has been a while, even if that time has been obscured by the release of some of Avalanche’s side projects.

I haven’t heard anything about it in a while and Avalanche has been keeping pretty hush-hush about it since the second game was released. Could it happen? Sure, do I see it happening. Probably not. I’d imagine if it wants its game to live up to the expectations and grandeur of the previous one, it’ll need a little more time.

Star Wars: 1313 revealed as an 8th-gen title by E3 2013

Star Wars: 1313 has had a long and convoluted development and the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney just made its status even murkier. All indications are that it is still in development, but it’s rumored to be an 8th-gen title now, thus why updates have been nonexistent since last E3.

It was pretty clear from the start that this was going to be a next generation title, like Watch Dogs, but nothing was officially announced on the matter (for obvious reasons). However, due to the recent Disney buyout, I’m beginning to wonder if this game is even in development or it’s going to be quietly canceled. It is a next-gen game, that I believe, but its existence seems nebulous at this point.

This has looked like a title that would need new hardware since it was first shown, but it has had its’ focus and story changed so often during development it’s hard to know how much of what we’ve seen is even still being used. Disney says it is still in production and it doesn’t plan on canceling it. If so, E3 would be the perfect time to say so and show it off to remind people about it. I’m just not all that confident it’ll happen.

I’m generally with Shawn and Andrew on this: it’s a game always destined for newer platforms, and the only question is whether it will release at all. It seemed fairly far into development, so I’m more optimistic than the others, but I know Disney’s focus is to monetize the core film series rather than explore the expanded universe.

Might as well make it a standout game for the system. Considering people are looking for something different from the Star Wars franchise and people seemed to like the The Force Unleashed, this will probably be an interesting game since you take up the role of a bounty hunter. I mean, everyone likes Boba Fett, right?

Final Fantasy XV to be revealed for PS4 by E3 2013

During Sony’s PlayStation 4 press conference, perhaps the most confusing presentation was done by Square Enix. Coming on stage with nothing to show except a repeat of the Agni’s Philosophy footage and the promise of showing a Final Fantasy game for it at E3, rumors have been swirling over what it was referring to. There are three already announced, though unreleased and not PS4-bound, Final Fantasy titles to pick from, though the most popular rumor is that this will be a new title, the fifteenth mainline entry in the series.

After the tease during Sony’s big PS4 event, I would be surprised if this wasn’t the case. Whether or not Final Fantasy XV is just Versus XIII or an entirely new game is up for debate, but I think the next Final Fantasy title has to be for the new consoles. It seems like the obvious choice at this point.

It’s gotta be, right? I mean, even Square Enix isn’t so out of touch as to think it can say that and then not give us Final Fantasy XV, right? Right? Sorry, I’m trying to convince myself of this. I really only see three games that could fit the tease: XIV‘s relaunch getting a PS4 release, which would make everyone furious, Versus XIII moving to PS4, which no one would believe, or XV. So, in my mind, it really has to be XV. Especially since I’m half-convinced Versus XIII turned into XIII-3.

Hrm. I’m hesitant, though this is the only likely thing that Square Enix could’ve been teasing. Here’s why: isn’t “the big Final Fantasy reveal” what the Tokyo Game Show is for? Still, the tease suggests otherwise. We may get a tiny bit of information then, with the full trailer at TGS.

This can go one of three directions. Either Square Enix chickens out on us and just gives us grand updates to XIV thanks to it recent reboot, it announces Type-0‘s release in the US or it actually announces this game. I’m more inclined to say the other two though.
