Cisco Eyeing Tivo/Nintendo for Buyout?

February 1, 2006

Given the recent acquisition of Scientific Atlanta by Cisco a move to buyout TiVo only makes sense. Buying out Nintendo however just sounds ludicrous. Microsoft is not emerging as a key competitor to Cisco in the home entertainment market. That is a market that MS is currently dominating. If anything, Cisco is the emerging competitor and buying TiVo would only strengthen that position. The union of Cisco and Nintendo is still strange and I don’t see that happening anytime soon. Nintendo is a company with very deep roots in Japan and being owned by Cisco wouldn’t go over well.

That being said I would love Cisco to buy TiVo and roll that software into all existing SA DVR boxes. SA’s DVR interface sucks compared to the TiVo interface.
