I know this story broke yesterday and I wanted to wait a day and see if any new details surfaced, but Chris Morris is as good a source as any. With Nintendo’s policy of “We do not comment on rumors” I doubt we will get any info in the near future.
Nintendo was up front with their intentions regarding the DS. It was not to be a replacement for the current GBA SP. The product lines, while there is some compatability, were to remain separate. The idea that they were going to bring out a new GB was always there and some industry analyst decided it was going to be this year based on previous product cycles. I can’t say for sure if this will be a smart thing or not, but I know Nintendo is going to feel the heat come PSP launch time. At any rate, only time will tell if this is going to pan out and I have highly mixed feelings about Nintendo trying to support 3 platforms at one time.
