THQ Confirms Warhammer 40k MMORPG

March 1, 2007

Following up on the phenomenal success of THQ’s Relic developed Dawn of War real-time strategy PC game series and its two expansions, THQ officials have now confirmed the development of of a new MMORPG based on the franchise’s source material, none other than Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 tabletop war game.

The MMO is currently in development at THQ’s Texas based Vigil Games studio. Of course, it remains to be seen how a MMO such as this, even with the considerable name recognition as Warhammer 40,000, will match up against Blizzard’s MMO powerhouse World of Warcraft.

The game is just one of what will certainly be many upcoming games based on the property, as THQ has extended its exclusive worldwide licensing agreement with Games Workshop through 2013, covering not only the PC, but consoles and handhelds as well. The agreement also now includes Games Workshop’s Gorkamorka and Necromunda properties.

“The Warhammer 40,000 universe provides a richness of worlds, characters and stories and level of depth that translates perfectly to interactive experiences across multiple genres and systems,” commented Kelly Flock, executive vice president of worldwide publishing, THQ. “We see a lot of opportunity to build new and different games based on Games Workshop’s fantastic property in the coming years, beginning with our newly announced MMO.”
