December 2006

I was talking to a friend of mine who was interested in picking up an original Xbox. The 360 is too rich for his blood right now and he was interested in the original library. As anyone who has been to a retail store recently knows, you can’t buy an original Xbox in the store right now. With a quick look at upcoming release dates, there are more than a few titles, albeit not high profile games, aimed for release on the Xbox. Why would developers continue to support a system they knew was no longer available?

Another indicator would be the lack of full BC on the 360. These Xbox only games, of which Destroy All Humans! and DAH! 2 are included, are not playable on the 360 which makes it necessary to own an original Xbox to continue to enjoy them.

It just seems to me that it would be a great time to bring out a $99 Xbox Lite that was streamlined and in the same design as the 360. This new Xbox could even be compatible with the blade style dashboard of the 360. I think it would be a major upgrade for existing Xbox owners, I would buy one, and would make a great purchase for first time gamers that are not interested in making the Next Gen leap just yet.

I’m just living in my own world here. What do you think?

GameTap shot over an email today letting us know they were adding 13 new games this week as they coined this week 20th Century Warfare Week. This week’s releases include:

Soldiers: Heroes of War II
Air Raid
G.I. combat: Episode 1, Battle of Normandy
Pearl Harbor 2
Cuban Missile Crisis: The Aftermath
P.O.W. Prisoners of War

Are any of you currently using GameTap for games other than the new Sam & Max series? If so, how do you like it?

The Nintendo Wii, as it was predicted, is a massive success in Japan. Surprisingly enough, Zelda was not #1 in terms of sales, but Wii Sports (which was not bundled in Japan, but the console was much cheaper than in the US, or in Europe). Here are the numbers from the first 2 days:

WarioWare: Smooth Moves – 63,954
Super Swing Golf – 16,908
Ennichi noTatsujin – 10,763

Tom Clancy

December 5, 2006

Splinter Cell has really differentiated itself from the other games on the Tom Clancy label by being designed for and excelling the most at delivering a truly console-oriented experience. While people can and likely will continue debate the merits of console shooters as opposed to their PC cousins, it’s hard to strictly deny their heritage. Splinter Cell, by way of comparison, has always been a game that’s felt like it was designed to be played with a controller in hand. It’s done well enough on the PC since its inception, but it never gained nearly the response it did when it first appeared as a marquee title on the Xbox.

Double Agent is a departure in some ways for the Splinter Cell series, though less so than it may have originally appeared. The basic premise of the story is that Sam’ daughter, his only tie to the A
