Following up on the phenomenal success of THQ’s Relic developed Dawn of War real-time strategy PC game series and its two expansions, THQ officials have now confirmed the development of of a new MMORPG based on the franchise’s source material, none other than Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 tabletop war game.
The MMO is currently in development at THQ’s Texas based Vigil Games studio. Of course, it remains to be seen how a MMO such as this, even with the considerable name recognition as Warhammer 40,000, will match up against Blizzard’s MMO powerhouse World of Warcraft.
The game is just one of what will certainly be many upcoming games based on the property, as THQ has extended its exclusive worldwide licensing agreement with Games Workshop through 2013, covering not only the PC, but consoles and handhelds as well. The agreement also now includes Games Workshop’s Gorkamorka and Necromunda properties.
“The Warhammer 40,000 universe provides a richness of worlds, characters and stories and level of depth that translates perfectly to interactive experiences across multiple genres and systems,” commented Kelly Flock, executive vice president of worldwide publishing, THQ. “We see a lot of opportunity to build new and different games based on Games Workshop’s fantastic property in the coming years, beginning with our newly announced MMO.”
Today Scott Orr, the man who oversaw EA’s original John Madden Football and NHL Hockey launched a new publishing and development studio called D2C Games designed to bring casual, episodic games to multiple platforms, with particular interest in the PSP.
I spoke with Orr for my day job at Gamasutra which is fairly interesting reading, if I do say so myself. Essentially, D2C is making casual real-time strategy sports games and episodic sci fi and horror games for multiple platforms, from next-gen consoles to mobile phones and PCs.
“Our games will appeal to casual gamers as well as hard core gamers who simply don’t have the time to devote hours to a game,” Orr commented in the interview, “but who still want to be able to team up and play with friends. Social networking is a key driver that is going to set us apart, allowing users to create game content and personalize the game.”
They are also hitting the PSP hard with the launch of DA
It seems that Battlefield 2142 was just released yesterday, but EA is hard at work on another entry in the series. Battlefield: Bad Company will feature the aspects we love about the BF series, mixing some Black into the game. The teaser is quite funny, I suggest downloading it here.
And here’s the trailer for Codemaster’s Heatseaker for the Wii. The video shows off how the Wii controls will work, and I gotta say, it looks both fast and fun. Chalk this one up on my list of Wii games to try out.
