This week, we discuss whether your gardens will be fighting on the PlayStation 4, the next project from Media Molecule and whether Sony will be bringing TV to its new console.

Garden Warfare to be announced for PS4 by E3 2014

At the moment, Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare is a Microsoft exclusive, only planned for Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. However, EA hasn’t ruled out the possibility of it landing on other platforms down the road. Might it get an announcement sooner rather than later?

It’s only a timed exclusive, I believe, so a release on other platforms (i.e. PS4) seems inevitable. The problem is I’m not 100% sure it will be announced before next E3, but we’ll see it happen eventually.

I think it’s virtually certain that Garden Warfare will end up on the PS4, since Plants vs. Zombies tends to infiltrate every single system it can. The only real uncertainty is when that will happen. I feel fairly confident that EA won’t waste any time waiting any longer than it has to, and will announce a port in the first half of the year.

I’m a bit more optimistic than Andrew, but I share his concerns: EA’s “special relationship” with Microsoft may delay the spread beyond next E3. That said, EA cares about non-North American markets, and that means moving beyond Xbox.

Most likely! PvZ is on literally anything that plays games in some form or another; I don’t see why EA wouldn’t want to get that sweet, sweet money from PS4 owners as well.

Media Molecule to announce PS4 game in 2013

Media Molecule has been busy working on Tearaway for the PS Vita lately, though it has already had some people working on an undisclosed PS4 project. With Tearaway nearing its holiday release date, might Media Molecule reveal its other project soon?

This seems more like an E3 2014 announcement, or at least a post-PS4 launch announcement, so I doubt we’ll hear about their next game anytime soon. As mentioned, Tearaway is Media Molecule’s next big thing, and that’s not going to be released until late November.

If this was to happen this year at this point, it’d be at TGS. I don’t have any idea how popular Media Molecule games have been in Japan, but I doubt they are popular enough to warrant an announcement. I find it more likely we’ll hear something early next year during the inevitable post-launch release lull.

Media Molecule is absolutely working on a PS4 project, and it’s probably headed for a 2014 release, but this year is about launch. There won’t be any focus on things that aren’t releasing after, say, the first few months of next year (like Second Son).

This one is a split for me. I wouldn’t be surprised if it went ahead and announced this year, but the year is on its way out, so since it has a game coming out already they might want to focus entirely on selling it?

Sony to reveal TV service on PS4 by E3 2014

The one big difference remaining between the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 is the DVR/TV capability integrated into the Xbox One. If recent rumors are true though, Sony may be on its way to meeting Microsoft head-on with that as well. Sony may be working on an Internet TV service that would be able to be run through a PS4 that would include channels from a number of the larger providers.

It’s hard to say. We still don’t even know how successful Microsoft’s Xbox One TV plans will be, so it might be a little early for Sony to jump on that bandwagon. I don’t think it’s a system seller no matter which audience you are going after with it.

Sony has pretty strong connections to a number of the most important media companies thanks to its movie division, so rumors that Sony is working on something with them isn’t unusual. However, the fact that Microsoft is trying to position the Xbox One as a set-top box without those connections gives Sony an advantage, if it chooses to press it. I think this will happen, though only as part of Sony’s E3 press conference.
Graham

Maybe? If it happens, it will very specifically be at next year’s E3, but Sony is scoring all kinds of points by not following Microsoft’s lead lately.
Lucas

Sony is always rolling out new media stuff, such as the live events thing that just launched, so I have no doubt that it’s going to have something similar. It’s probably just not going to go all-out on pushing it like Microsoft did, because of the way the narrative is currently going.
