Preview: Heading deep into Uncharted 3 territory

June 20, 2011

Indiana Jones is the quintessential rough-and-tumble, puzzle-busting treasure hunter and archeologist. Nathan Drake is quickly approaching Indiana Jones status though, as he embarks on his third adventure later this year. After a stunning introduction in Drake’s Fortune and a historically acclaimed sequel in Among Thieves, if anyone really needed another reason to love Nathan Drake as much as Indiana Jones, they now have it.

In Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, Nathan is chasing after the fabled ‘Atlantis of the Sands,’ a long-lost city in the middle of the Rub al-Khali desert on the Arabian Peninsula. He’s not alone in this pursuit though, as he’s dogged by an old nemesis and a clandestine order whose leader threatens to realize Drake’s worst fears. Luckily, he’s got Sully along for the journey.

The first thing to note about Drake’s Deception is how much it improves over Among Thieves in the action and tension during both the cinematics and the action sequences. The demo we got to see focused on Drake sneaking onto a massive cargo plane with the help of Elena. Unfortunately, he is discovered and has to make a frenetic dash across some buildings and onto the runway, where he eventually jumps onto the landing gear just as it takes off (with some help from Elena’s jeep driving skills). Drake is discovered onboard the plane, and gets into a scripted fight scene on the loading deck that was heavily reminiscent of an Indiana Jones scene.

Of course, Sony is pushing the 3D support hard, and Uncharted 3 is their showpiece for the year. If we had to pick one game that definitely benefits from the 3D, it would indeed be Uncharted 3. The trailer we saw looked phenomenal, and makes us wish we actually had 3D TVs so that we could take advantage of it. We can’t wait to get our hands on it in November.
