PAX East – Shank

Snackbar Games contributor Joe Teed attended this year’s PAX East in Boston and is sharing his experiences at the event.

There’s probably not much I can add about Shank that you haven’t already seen in a video somewhere, but if you haven’t seen it, it’s a very solid side scrolling brawler with some nice comic-book inspired graphics.  It was nice to finally get my hands on it and see how it plays.

Battle Block Theater looks pretty much like what you’d expect from any Newgrounds game, but the gameplay is a little more creative than The Behemoth’s previous two outings.  BBT takes a page from Smash Bros. and similar games, and adds its own unique twists on traditional arena platformer combat.

Monday Night Combat is something pretty amazing to be under everyone’s radar until their big reveal at PAX.  Although it looks like a Team Fortress 2 clone at first, closer inspection reveals robot armies that the players have as allies much like DoTA or Demigod, as well as a tower-defense setup.

The event was a little packed, with 1 1/2 hour waits for panels and some organization issues, so mostly I will be reporting on things I saw on the show floor.

Looks like Burnout will be heading for the PS3 and the Xbox 360 as an “open world” game. Also there will be car crashing and explosions. I’m not sure how well the format will work for this license, but plenty of others have successfully made the transition.
