2014mostanticipated

There’s a lot to look forward to in the coming year! Members of the Snackbar Games staff gathered to share which title each is most eagerly awaiting in 2014.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

I never played the original Witcher and didn’t get into The Witcher 2 until a year after it originally released, yet it quickly became one of the best RPGs I’ve played in quite some time. The Witcher 3 looks to continue the bold traditions from the first game, complete with exciting choices that completely alter the story and rewarding combat, but this time with a gigantic open-world to explore. Finally having the opportunity to traverse the endlessly impressive fantasy world of The Witcher is more than enough to make it a game I can’t wait to get my hands on. – Andrew Passafiume READ MORE

I’m a creature of habit. I tap the dashboard three times when I drive through a yellow light. I’ll eat the exact same meal for weeks in a row. I rarely alter my jogging routes. I’ll latch onto a podcast and listen to every single episode, or even continue watching a show long after my interest has waned.

These stubborn tactics and silly quirks carry over to video games. I don’t know if it’s perseverance that gets me through long games that I hate, but I do know that I’m almost incapable of adjusting my behavior, even when it makes complete sense to do so. It may prevent me from playing an outstanding title, or cause me to play a game I don’t even want to play. All I know is that if there is a game series, I’m going to start with the first one. This year was one of singular experiences for me. Games can take upwards of 30 hours to complete, but most of my favorites have a standout moment that cemented the experience as a good one for me. XCOM: Enemy Within offers substantially more than MEC troopers, but when I saw my first one run off the ramp, I knew I was playing something special. 40 hours later, I still do. That MEC trooper died long ago (I’m not very good at XCOM), but every time I see one come down the ramp or jump down from the Skyranger without a rappelling line, I’m reminded of ‘Bolts’ in his bright pink MEC chassis and the first time he punched a Thin Man so hard that it died.

10. Guacamelee!

Traversal is not usually fun. In Guacamelee!, it is. Combat abilities and traversal abilities are the same, and it never gets old to use an uppercut instead of a super-jump. Crossing from the light world to the dark world is used for combat and traversal as well. Oh, and every handy move you have is taught by a goat. It’s ridiculous and fun and dumb in all the best ways that only games and cartoons can be. READ MORE
