Last time I discussed Pandemic, and while I was on that train of thought, I figured I might as well discuss another cooperative game featuring emergency professionals in Kevin Lanzing’s 2011 offering Flash Point: Fire Rescue (published by Indie Boards & Cards). As might be surmised from the title, Flash Point is a game about a team of firefighters battling a burning building while trying to save the victims trapped inside. Why there are so many victims (as many as ten) in that building is never explained, but fortunately that’s not really an obstacle to enjoying the game. READ MORE

Anomaly: Warzone Earth put a twist on the usual tower defense genre by putting you on the offense against the towers. It was a success, seeing versions on PC, iOS, consoles and more. The recent Anomaly: Korea extended the idea of the original, but Anomaly 2, releasing later this year, is the true successor. It continues the story with new landscapes, units and command powers. There will always be games that are more well-suited to one platform or another. Portable games designed for quick, pick-up-and-play action and collaboration. Console games are best-suited for a big screen and the simplicity of a controller. Computer games pride themselves on flexibility and depth. If a game designer can play to the advantages of a specific platform, experiences are lifted even higher by their platform of choice.

A Valley Without Wind 2 knows exactly what it wants to be, and carries out on the strengths of what it is. It is a game that exemplifies complexity, modularity and strategy in a way that few games have the guts to do. It is a truly fascinating work in its own right, and while it isn’t for everyone, it is an experience that every gamer should at least try. READ MORE
